Missing a VAT deadline in the UAE is expensive, and most late returns aren't caused by difficult tax questions. They're caused by books that weren't up to date when the period ended. This article sets out the deadlines, what being late costs, and how to stay ahead of both.

When the return and the payment are due

The FTA gives each registered business a tax period, usually quarterly, sometimes monthly, starting on a month set at registration. The VAT return (Form 201) and any VAT payable are both due within 28 days of the end of the period, through EmaraTax.

Your own periods may be offset from calendar quarters. Check the tax period shown on your VAT registration in EmaraTax rather than assuming.

What being late costs

These are the figures in force for defaults from 14 April 2026, as summarised on our UAE VAT page:

  • Late return: AED 1,000 the first time; AED 2,000 if it happens again within 24 months.
  • Late payment: 14% a year on the unpaid tax, calculated monthly, until it's paid.

The two are separate: filing on time but paying late still costs the monthly charge, and paying on time doesn't excuse a late return.

Correcting a mistake after you've filed

Errors happen: an expense recorded in the wrong period, a sale treated as zero-rated that wasn't. How you fix it depends on the size of the tax difference:

  • If the error changes the tax by AED 10,000 or less, you can generally correct it in the return for the period in which you discover it.
  • If it changes the tax by more than AED 10,000, you submit a voluntary disclosure through EmaraTax.

Correcting an error yourself, before the FTA finds it, is always the better position to be in.

How to never be late again

  1. Record as you go. A return built from three months of receipts in the last week is a return built in a hurry. Invoices and expenses recorded the day they happen leave nothing to reconstruct.
  2. Know your figure before the deadline. If you know in the second month of the quarter roughly what you'll owe, you can keep the cash aside.
  3. Lock what you filed. Once a period is filed, its figures shouldn't move. Late entries belong in the next open period.
  4. Keep the documents with the entries. If the FTA asks, every figure on the return should lead back to an invoice or receipt in seconds.

Questions

Is the deadline the same for monthly filers?

Yes: 28 days after the end of each monthly period, for both the return and the payment.

Do I have to file if I had no sales this period?

Yes. A registered business files a return for every tax period, even if every figure is zero.

Can penalties be waived?

The FTA has a process to request a waiver or reconsideration in some circumstances. It's not automatic; your accountant or a registered tax agent can advise whether it applies.
