Standard rate, 5%. Zero-rated and exempt supplies carry no VAT.

How it's worked out.

Two formulas cover almost every case. The second one is where most mistakes happen: VAT inside a total is not 5% of the total.

Adding VAT to a price

VAT = price × 5%

AED 1,000 × 5% = AED 50 VAT, AED 1,050 in total

Taking VAT out of a total

VAT = total × 5 ÷ 105

AED 1,050 × 5 ÷ 105 = AED 50 VAT, AED 1,000 before VAT

Three rules worth knowing.

  • VAT on each line

    A full tax invoice shows the VAT for each line as well as the total, and the VAT amount in AED even when you invoice in another currency.

  • Rounded to the fils

    Amounts are rounded to two decimal places. Work out VAT per line, then add the lines up, so the invoice and the return agree.

  • Not every sale is 5%

    Exports and some healthcare and education are zero-rated; residential rent and some financial services are exempt. Check before you charge.

Fisqel does this on every invoice and receipt.

Type an invoice in WhatsApp and the VAT is worked out per line, in AED, with the right treatment. Send a receipt and the VAT you can claim is split out for your return.

Questions

What owners ask first.

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?

5% on most goods and services, since 1 January 2018. Some supplies are zero-rated (0%) and some are exempt.

How do I work out the VAT in a price that includes it?

Multiply the total by 5 and divide by 105. For AED 210, that's AED 10 of VAT and AED 200 before VAT.

Why isn't the VAT in a total just 5% of it?

Because the 5% was added to the price before VAT, not to the total. 5% of AED 1,050 is AED 52.50, but the VAT inside it is AED 50.

Do I charge VAT if I'm not registered?

No. Only VAT-registered businesses charge VAT and issue tax invoices. Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 in 12 months.

General information, not tax advice. The calculator uses the 5% standard rate. Check the treatment of your own supplies with your accountant or the FTA.
